An in-depth exploration of five popular chiropractic techniques

Chiropractors are masters of anatomy.  The discipline concerns itself with direct and sometimes physical manipulation of the target anatomy. The confidence and foundational anatomical knowledge of a chiropractic practitioner must know no boundaries. A series of assessments and diagnosis is important before chiropractic intervention because of the aggressive nature of the treatment. Unlike physiotherapy, chiropractic therapies concentrate less on empowering the patient for healing themselves by personal initiative and more on resolving the problem to its root and educate the patient in order to prevent re-injury. In fact, even the best physiotherapist in Delhi may often suggest chiropractic treatment to a patient. This article will try to explore five chiropractic techniques and dive deep into their application in different scenarios.

The Gonstead technique

For the application of this technique, the patient has to lie on the side. This is a hands-on technique used for realigning joints, adjusting the lower back and pelvic girdle region. The most relevant area of application for this technique is the cases of joint pain, stiffness, spinal misalignment, etc. A chiropractor must learn this technique and master it very early in the coursework because of the wide applicability and basic nature of this technique.

The activator method

In spite of having major ethical and safety limitations, the activator method is still in wide use by chiropractors. The preciseness and versatility of activator mediated adjustment method statistically surpasses the ethical limitations. Instead of using the hands as means of adjusting a region or body part, this technique involves the use of an activator device. The device generates an impulse and gentle pressure on the region of interest in order to introduce proper alignment. The technique is much more precise and applicable in the case of smaller localization.

Decompression manipulation

This technique is performed on a specially built table. The strategically segmented table is designed to flex the patient’s lower back in a specific manner to reduce tension and pave the ground for smoother adjustments. This technique is also fairly widespread but requires expert supervision. During the performance, the patient should feel a little stretch followed by relaxing sensations. Another popular name for this technique is flexion-distraction.

Diversified technique

This technique is best applied for inducing movement of locked and stiffened joints. It is similar to the Gonstead technique and used in case of problems of extremity and spinal cord. This technique involves gentle and strategic thrusts for restoring movements of a joint or the spine.

The Thompson technique

This technique is a specialized method for spine adjustment. A specialized and padded drop table is used for lowering the region of interest by a fraction of an inch. After the drop, a gentle thrust is applied for restoring the alignment. There is also massive applicability in the case of extremities. Other popular nomenclature: drop table technique.
